NOVEMBER 12th: New Works by Larry Kinney and William Herod
Exhibition: November 12th - December 3rd, 2011
Larry Kinney Bio:
Lawrence Kinney's career in sculpture extends over twenty years and encompasses the completion of degrees through Munson Williams Proctor Institute, Utica, NY, and the State University of New York at Buffalo. Exhibitions in Buffalo, NY, Erie, PA, and New York City have included several awards for sculpture. As an undergraduate, Kinney was awarded a fellowship to study the art and architecture of Spain. As guest lecturer at the State University of New York at Buffalo, Mr. Kinney taught undergraduate courses in sculpture and three-dimensional design. As co-owner and curator of the Low Profile Gallery of Fine Arts in Utica, New York, opportunities to organize, finance and present exhibits were realized. Mr. Kinney’s sculptures have appeared in galleries, architectural facades, colleges, theme parks, restaurants, and private collections across the United States and in Puerto Rico.
Artist Statement:
My current body of work explores the integration of form, color and texture, while maintaining enough subtlety to imply the possibility of an additional form or function. Each piece consists of resins and pigments over carved mixed media. Color is layered between completely clear overcoats that emphasize the sculpture's physicality and character. Volume, color and shape are meant to interact naturally as the sculpture is turned on a slow RPM motor. The effect of each piece depends on the materials, ambient conditions, and the character of the under-sculpture.
William Herod Bio:
Born in the mid-20th century, William Herod has spent most of his life involved in one creative endeavor after another.
As a designer, he has created and marketed high end contemporary furnishings and accessories in metal as well as art furniture and sculptural lighting.
His metal work can be seen throughout Buffalo and Western New York, and has sold to galleries and furniture shops from L.A. to Tokyo…
Armed with an eye for detail, William Herod's photographic pursuits deal with that which is right in front of us. His "Looking Up" series showcases majestic sky-scapes framed by decaying industrial ruins, while his "Up Close and Personal" works take a close-up look at the colors, shapes, and textures, of the world around us.
With his introduction to the digital medium a new passion was born, and over the past several years the skills acquired throughout his lifetime in the physical world have been transmuted for use in the digital realm. And in embracing photo manipulation, digital painting and 3-D rendering, he has discovered an endless potential for illustration and story telling, the result of which is his latest creation,
‘Task Zeno: Confessions of a Mechanical Man’, an illustrated science fiction novel.
Fine art pursuits include his 'atmospheric' paintings in both oils and acrylics, as well as wall sculpture of wood, metal, and found materials which reflect his love for "The Machine Age".
His painting "Ascension", was recently picked to be exhibited at "World Art in Venice" in Venice, Italy. But was held up at customs in Milan.
On learning this, the shows curator, Fausto Brozzi, inspired William to create a totally new painting the day before the show and complete it as a performance piece the next night at the opening. The painting,"La Vita Nuova" (The New Life), is currently on display at Ca' Zanardi.
