OCTOBERS MONSTER ART EVENT!

October brings our next show straight from Potter's Field.
We are proud to present renowned Photographer John Thomas Grant from Rockport, Massachusetts. His solo exhibition entitled, "Final Thoughts - Eternal Beauty in Stone" Opens October 6th, 2012 6-10pm.  John will be selling and signing the beautiful hardcover book of his photography also entitled Final Thoughts- Eternal Beauty in Stone (cover below) at the Opening Reception only.

Artists Brief Bio:
John wasn’t born with a camera around his neck, or a cemetery in his backyard. Ten years ago, He was neither a photographer nor a Taphophile (a passion for and enjoyment of cemeteries). "My art evolved in a search for my family roots; it was genealogy that brought me to the cemetery". Before the serendipitous discovery of peace & sublime tranquility, He was blowing my brains out in the music business. Nearly 30 years of headbanging assaults on his nerves was bled before retiring in the mid-90’s. It was not too long after, the inspiration struck a second time. This time, He hoped for greater amity with my spirit. So far, so good….

Mission Statement:
“I want my work to reach into the soul of the believer; the mind of the doubter; into the hearts of all.”

John will be bringing along a very special guest with him opening night.
Victoriana Lady Lisa: The Victoriana Lady Lisa will portray a 19th century widow attired in authentic mourning clothing, a.k.a. – widow’s weeds, and mourning jewelry. She’ll meet & greet visitors with stories from days gone by. They will be entertained with anecdotes of Victorian mourning etiquette, rituals and customs, and attire – Why are widow weeds called widow weeds?

Our opening reception is one of the many opening receptions happening that night during the
2nd Annual Downtown Springville Fall Art Crawl 2012.  Sponsored by VanOver Fine Arts Springville Center for the Arts and the Downtown Springville Economic Development Group.

This event combines the Arts and Economic Development, by placing artwork into businesses on Main Street in our Historic Downtown district, turning each location into a small gallery for the event. Bringing people into our beautiful downtown to walk and discover the businesses along Main Street.
Each business participating will have an opening reception that starts at 6pm on Sat October 6th.
Last Fall's event was a huge success for both businesses and Artists.
So if you are heading out to Ellicottville for the Fall Festival stop by and enjoy good art, great people while you stroll from gallery to gallery along our quaint Main Street.

Come See Springville!

Stay tuned for more details being added about special events and where to go to get your Art Crawl maps.

"Dames: An Exploration of the Figurative Female"

Our September 8th, 2012 Opening Reception:  6 - 10 pm  with an early viewing from 12 - 4 pm
Featuring figurative artist:  Erika Thurkins - "Dames: An Exploration of the Figurative Female"

"Nude Lounging in a Field" - Medium:  Oils - 38"x 30"

In her first Sole Exhibition, it is Erika’s intention to showcase a few different styles in varying media, She feels there are an infinite number of ways to depict beauty—a beauty every woman possesses, be it conventional or heart wrenching.  You will see rainbow-hued bodyscapes, traditional Rubenesque paintings, and you will also see various figures rendered arbitrarily in rather inconspicuous postures. Her work is also known for its capture of subtle emotion, which allows for open interpretation by its viewers, and for its feminist undertones.

Erika attended Shippensburg University where she won several top awards in the Art Department’s annual juried exhibitions, a seat as the art department representative for the University Student Council, and eventually graduated with a BA in Fine Arts.  After relocating to Western New York, she then gained a competitive spot as an intern for the Curatorial Department of the Albright-Knox Museum in Buffalo.  Erika now resides in West Falls, NY with her husband and new baby.
