Opening July 7th - 'Finding Center' Paintings by Karen Tashjian

"Aqua Circles" - 24"x 24"

Join us July 7, 2012  from 6-10pm for “Finding Center" an exhibition of paintings by local artist Karen Tashjian. Karen has a BS in Design and a BA in Architecture from Cornell University.  She has practiced architecture in NYS, and has taught Architectural Design Studio and Communications, at the University of Buffalo. She has been painting seriously for the last 14 years.
Karen combines her fine art skills with her classical architectural training, giving structure to chaos, while allowing randomness into the structure.

Karen has always been fascinated by buildings of utility as they lack superficial adornment and have an honesty about them. She is drawn to the inherent organizing systems of an image as well as the sensuality of surface."I hope for my work to take the viewer beyond the materialistic aspects of our culture to a more experiential realm where they are able to see beyond objects and into relationships, juxtapositions, and surface." Karen often fragment objects so that she can position the viewer to see this organization of  her pieces. "The surfaces that make an object, also define a space so there is a constant symbiosis between positive and negative. In the same way, I believe that the surfaces of a painting can affect the space in which the viewer stands."

"Stoop Abstract" - 8"x 8"
The exhibition will be on view starting July 7th with the Opening Reception, through July 28, 2012.

JUNE 2nd SHOW - 'ROCK N ROLL STATIC'

“ Karen has been a fixture on the independent Cleveland rock scene for 20 or so years. Band after band after band has stayed at her house, enjoyed her hospitality and friendship. Karen is also Cleveland rock and roll’s in-house photographer. Is there a band in Cleveland or a touring band that she has not shot? Doubtful. If you call yourself a Cleveland rocker and you don’t know Karen, you are bestowing upon yourself a dubious title.”
Will Sharf - Keelhaul

Karen Novak - Photographer

"Two of my great loves in life are Rock’n’Roll and photography."

In 1988 I pursued my dream and attended The Cleveland Institute of Art majoring in photography. I soon began to photograph the Cleveland music scene in such venues as The Euclid Tavern ,The Old Peabody's DownUnder, and The Grog Shop. If rock music was blaring, I was likely there taking pictures. Over the past 20+ years it has been my passion to photograph every Rock concert I could and I have been lucky enough to shoot hundreds of local acts as well as internationally known bands like Bauhaus, The Cramps, and the Ramones. I have also been fortunate enough to have photographed several bands in clubs before they were big, like Queens of the Stone Age, Mastodon, and Green Day. My work is more than simple documentation; I seek to capture the raw energy of live rock music and present it true to the visions of the artists. My work has been used as cover art for numerous bands and has been used as cover art for numerous bands and has been published in newspapers, books, magazines, and shown in galleries in Cleveland, New York, Chicago, California, and Texas.

'Living In Between Series - #1' -  30" x40" - Acrylic on Canvas

Exhibition: "Living in Between"
Opening Reception: May 5, 2012 from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m.
Closing Date: May 25, 2012

VanOver Fine Arts is pleased to host "Living in Between", an exhibition of paintings by Lisa Chamberlin.  A native of Western New York who now lives and works in New York City, Lisa has spent the last ten years producing this series of paintings which feature expressive female figures.  Highly textured, deeply saturated and uniquely placed, they are worth a visit to VanOver Fine Arts. The exhibition will be on view through May 25, 2012.

Artist’s Bio:
Lisa Chamberlin is a painter who lives and works in New York City. She grew up in western New York and studied sculpture and painting at the State University of New York at Oswego where she received her BFA.  Lisa has spent the last ten years working on a series of paintings titled Living In-between, whose subjects are expressive female figures. Her paintings have a sculptural quality.  She works in acrylic and builds up the thick paint with a palette knife, resulting in a textural, impressionistic-like painting.  The figures often occur isolated on the canvas, each dynamic pose depicting a struggle.  The gestures, unusual use of saturated colors, and configurations of the paintings give opportunities for new interpretations.

Artist’s Statement:
Living In-Between - Series
This series started with an all green pallet, the form blending with the environment like a summer foliage camouflage. The title of the series was inspired by the chapter in a children’s book called the World between Worlds. The characters come across a beautiful land that they soon discover makes them so content. If they are not careful and stay too long, they would become part of the landscape.  In this land there are innumerable ponds spread about.  Each pond would lead into another world with new experiences, each completely different from the other.  My world between worlds, Living In-Between, depicts my journey of living the life I dreamed I would.  These paintings are like self portraits;  they tell my story as I go thru life, discovering and growing.
I am always pushing, re-evaluating, and figuring out how to let go of expectations.  Along the way, I am learning to never become too complacent, reflecting on where I came from, and carefully choosing the next pond to enter.

I have been painting figures for many years, but I am not so much interested in the figures themselves, but rather using them as a symbol.  Each pose or position of the figure becomes a focus for me and how it relates to the space around it.  My figures are an expression.  Each are struggling and evolving, two things that often cannot exist without the other.  They are struggling with the space around them and with themselves. The forms take up most of the canvas and are absorbed in their own isolation. In solitude, there is time for contemplation and self-examination without any outside distractions.  They are confined to the boundary of the canvas, as if they are trying to push out, like a flower opening up to find it’s full potential.
